A Special Enrollment Period, also known as SEP, allows you to join, change or drop a Medicare Advantage plan or prescription drug plan outside of the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period in certain situations, such as when you move. These situations are called "qualifying events." In most cases, you have 2 full months after the month of a qualifying event to make plan changes.
The qualifying events for a Special Enrollment Period include, but are not limited to:
Retiring and losing your employer coverage
Moving out of the plan's service area
Receiving assistance from the state
Having been diagnosed with certain qualifying disabilities or chronic health conditions
Qualifying for Extra Help
